How does overfiring the kiln damage the kiln?

Firing beyond the temperature that the insulation is designed for can damage the insulation. Insulating firebricks can actually melt when fired too high. Overfiring clay can make the clay puddle on the shelf and kiln bottom, ruining these surfaces.
