Spread your partial load throughout the kiln with shelves and posts. Place a few items on each shelf so the ware is spaced evenly in the bottom, middle, and top of the kiln.
I have a small Paragon computer kiln with a 12" x 12" interior I recently stilted cone 6 glazed ceramic pieces.
