Should you apply kiln wash to the bottom of an enameling kiln?

Updated on Jan 24, 2025

Kiln wash is widely used in enameling. It is applied with a brush to the kiln's firebrick bottom for protection against dripping enamels. One application with a paintbrush should last several years. Applying the kiln wash takes just a few minutes. When enamel drips onto the kiln-washed bottom, let the kiln cool to room temperature. Then lift the enamel out with a screwdriver. A small section of kiln wash will flake off with the enameling. Apply more kiln wash to the bare area of the brick bottom where the enameling was removed.
