What happens if you leave a carbon steel armature

Leaving the armature inside the clay sculpture will not harm the kiln. But difference in expansion rate between the metal and the clay may damage the sculpture.
What do you use to make the hole in clay beads? What is more accurate: the witness cones, or a pyrometer?
