In some materials I've read that you should bisque fire your pottery

Low fire ceramics (cone 05): Fire the bisque one or two cones hotter than the glaze. High fire ceramics (cone 6): Fire the bisque one cone cooler than the glaze. That is only a very general guideline. The exact cones to fire the material vary depending on the glaze and clay.
