PARAGON KM18 Double Barrel: More space, same trusted performance
The Paragon KM18 Double Barrel is a wider, taller version of the standard KM18—offering greater chamber volume while keeping the same depth. Designed specifically for bladesmiths who need more interior space for larger knives, sword blanks, or multiple items per batch, this model provides serious capability in a compact, firebrick-insulated package.
Why own a kiln like this?
Owning a kiln gives you full control over your heat treating process—crucial when working with high-performance steels. Whether you're developing your own tempering schedules or perfecting blade hardness through normalization, quenching, and annealing, the KM18 Double Barrel puts consistent results at your fingertips. No outsourcing, no delays—just reliable, professional-quality heat treating from your own shop.
Why choose the Paragon KM18 Double Barrel?
The KM18 Double Barrel offers a spacious interior measuring approximately 13.25 inches wide x 5.25 inches high x 18 inches deep. This expanded chamber allows for larger or wider blades, as well as increased batch sizes. Like all KM Series base models, the KM18 Double Barrel uses durable 3" firebrick insulation and is equipped with a single-zone temperature control system.
It comes standard with a drop-down door, which serves as a convenient loading shelf. The SENTINEL Touch Xpress digital controller gives you complete programming flexibility and easy operation, whether you're running basic or complex heat treating cycles. A solid-state relay ensures quiet, precise power regulation with longer service life. The door switch automatically disables power when open for added safety.
Who is this kiln for?
The KM18 Double Barrel is a great fit for serious hobbyists and professional knifemakers who regularly work with wider blades or who prefer batch processing. It's also ideal for those working with sculptural tools, dies, or bushcraft blades that don’t fit well in narrower chambers. If you've outgrown your current kiln’s capacity or simply want more flexibility in what you can heat treat, this model is a strong upgrade.

Get a Gas Injection Flow Meter (GIFM) and Solenoid Kit
Achieving a clean, scale-free blade finish during heat treatment isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about quality, consistency, and minimizing post-processing time. The Gas Injection Flow Meter (GIFM) is a trusted tool among professional bladesmiths and heat treaters for precisely that reason.
Minimize Scale, Maximize Results
During high-temperature heat treating, oxygen in the kiln chamber reacts with the steel surface, producing unwanted oxidation scale. Traditionally, this has been mitigated using stainless steel foil wrap—a solution that works, but comes with added cost, time, and waste.
With the GIFM installed, you can introduce an inert gas like argon or nitrogen directly into the firing chamber. This displaces oxygen and significantly reduces oxidation, helping you:
Eliminate or reduce the need for stainless foil
Retain sharper blade edges and crisper grind lines
Improve consistency in finish and minimize cleanup
Create a cleaner working environment
Take control even further with the Solenoid Valve Kit, which works in tandem with the GIFM. This upgrade lets you:
Automate gas flow by turning it on/off at specific stages of the firing process (per segment)
Ensure gas is flowing only when needed—saving resources and increasing safety
Achieve repeatable, precision-controlled atmospheres in your heat treating cycles
Perfect for advanced users and production settings, this upgrade transforms your kiln into a highly efficient and customizable heat treating system.
This system has been field-proven by bladesmiths, metalworkers, and heat treatment professionals who demand the best finish and tightest process control.
Whether you’re eliminating scale on high-carbon steel or refining your results with stainless alloys, the GIFM with optional solenoid valve gives you an edge—literally and figuratively.
